Dandy's Pre-Season Gardening Tips for Spring

Clear up and compost

We're all guilty of neglecting our beds and borders during the winter months and clearing them up feels like a massive task.  But a quick clear up of any old leaves and twigs and a mini prune of dormant shrubs or plants will soon have them looking tidy and workable again!

Make your own compost pile with the leaves, dead plants, old veg roots and soil- our empty bulk bags are amazing for creating your own mobile compost pile.

To quickly compost leaves start with a layer 6 to 8 inches thick of leaves, an inch of soil and an inch of manure/mushroom compost. You can also add some nitrogen fertiliser.  Mix up the layers every two weeks and keep the pile moderately moist.

Give your soil a super boost

Add a rook of our Dandy's Springmix Compost into your topsoil, or use as a mulch, for a much needed boost of nutrients.  During the growing seasons plants and flowers will exhaust all the nutrients from your soil - adding a rich compost before Spring hits will give your existing plants everything they need to grow big and healthy.  Compost is plant food and needs replacing every 6 - 12months to keep your borders veg plots and beds looking full of life.

Dandy Tip: Allow our Springmix compost to do the hard work and use as a mulch over your existing borders - simply leave over the top of your exposed soil and come back in the spring when you are ready to plant!

Replenish your gravel

During the winter months your driveway and other gravelled areas may take a battering from the weather and heavy use.

Brighten up your gravel drive or borders with a fresh layer of decorative chippings and get instant kerb appeal!

De-weed and mulch

This goes hand in hand with a good clear up but it massively essential for an easy, low maintenance garden, whilst also providing your plants and flowers a loving and happy environment to thrive.  Once you have removed weeds and added your compost now is the perfect time to add a mulch.  Our Landscaping Bark or Composted Mulch Fines are ideal mulches for tidying up your borders and veggie plots whilst also continuing to break down and add more nutrients back to the soil, win win!

Topdress and re-seed

March is the ideal time to topdress an existing lawn but if the weather is right you can start in February.  Use our Dandy's Topdressing Sand and Soil mix to add light material to the surface of the lawn before re-seeding and feeding.

Brush over your grass at a depth of 1-2mm ready for re-seeding and feeding.  Topdressing has a number of benefits including controlling thatch, drainage, and smoothing the lawn surface - all in great time for a lovely lush Spring lawn!  Don't forget your Grass Seed!

Now is a great time to get your Summer bulbs planted out and sow some early Spring veggies, such as lettuce, that don't mid the cooler weather.  Looking for a new veg plot or topping up an existing one?  Our VegeGrow Topsoil contains everything you need to plant straight into.  For existing veg plots our Multi Purpose Peat Free Compost is perfect for replenishing nutrients!
