Salvia Victoria Blue

Salvia farinacea 'Victoria Blue' is a Half-Hardy Perennial (H3). In the UK, it is typically grown as a Half-Hardy Annual because it cannot survive our cold, wet winters outdoors. It holds the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM) for its consistent performance.

The "Mealy" Characteristic: The stems and calyces are covered in fine, silvery hairs (the mealy coating), which provides a striking contrast to the intense indigo blooms. This unique texture also makes the flower spikes particularly resilient to wind and rain.

Pollinator Star: Officially listed as an RHS Plant for Pollinators, 'Victoria Blue' is a high-nectar variety that is particularly favoured by honeybees and butterflies. Its compact, bushy habit (45-50cm) makes it perfect for adding "the hum of summer" to pots and border edges.

Salvias are remarkably productive, but they require a warm start to ensure they flower in their first season.

How to Sow:
Sow indoors from February to April. Surface sow the seeds onto moist compost—do not cover as they require light to trigger germination. Maintain a temperature of 20-24°C; seedlings typically appear in 10-14 days.

Where to Plant:
Plant out in late May or June once all risk of frost has passed. They demand full sun and thrive in light, well-drained soil. They are highly heat-tolerant, making them one of the best choices for sunny patios and south-facing borders.

Ongoing Care:
Pinch out the growing tips when the seedlings are about 10cm tall to encourage a bushier, multi-stemmed plant. Deadhead spent flower spikes regularly to keep the blue displays coming. A high-potash liquid feed in late summer will boost a spectacular second flush of autumn blooms.
