Specially selected for lawn improvement, this nutrient-rich compost can be applied as a light top dressing to established grass or used when repairing, overseeding and renovating damaged lawns. It adds valuable organic matter to the soil, helping to improve soil structure, moisture retention, drainage and the availability of nutrients around the grass roots.

Regular light applications can encourage stronger root development, healthier grass growth and a thicker, more resilient lawn.

Top dressing is particularly beneficial after aerating, as the compost can be brushed into the holes to improve the soil around the grass roots.

10mm Screened Compost

This compost has been screened to approximately 0 - 10mm, making it easier to spread and rake across a lawn.

Please note that this is a natural, compost-based soil improver rather than an ultra-fine sand and loam lawn dressing. Fine compost particles will naturally be present, along with occasional small fibrous or woody fragments. These will continue to break down naturally after application.

It should always be applied in a light layer and thoroughly brushed or raked between the grass blades.

This product is not only for dead lawns. It can be used as a maintenance treatment on healthy, established lawns as well as for restoring thin, patchy or damaged areas.

For a completely dead or bare lawn, remove the dead grass and thatch first. Loosen the existing soil, rake a light layer of compost into the surface and level the area before applying grass seed. Do not use a thick layer of compost as a standalone replacement for topsoil.

How to Apply to an Established Lawn

1. Mow the Lawn

Mow the lawn slightly shorter than usual, aiming for a grass height of approximately 20 - 30mm. Do not scalp the lawn or remove more than one-third of the grass blade in a single cut. If the grass is very long, reduce the height gradually over two or more cuts.

Collect or rake away the grass clippings so the compost can reach the soil surface. Guidance for compost top dressing recommends mowing short and removing the clippings before application.

2. Prepare the Surface

Remove weeds, moss, dead grass and heavy thatch. For the best results, scarify and aerate compacted lawns before applying the compost.

3. Spread a Thin Layer

Spread the compost evenly at a depth of approximately 3 to 6mm.

Brush or rake it thoroughly into the grass so that the tips of the grass remain clearly visible. Avoid leaving piles or covering the grass completely, as an excessively thick application may smother the lawn.

A light layer of around 6mm, or approximately ¼ inch, is widely recommended for compost top dressing.

4. Overseed if Required

Grass seed can be applied after the compost has been spread and raked in. Lightly rake again to create contact between the seed, compost and soil.

5. Water

Water the area gently after application. When overseeding, keep the surface consistently moist until the new grass has germinated and established.

Avoid applying during very hot, dry, frozen or waterlogged conditions.

When to Apply

Apply during the active growing season when the lawn can recover and grow through the dressing.

The best times are generally:

• Spring, once the lawn is actively growing
• Early autumn, while the soil is still warm and moisture levels are increasing

Early autumn is particularly suitable for aerating, top dressing and lawn renovation.

When Can I Mow Again?

For an established lawn, wait until the compost has settled and the grass is growing clearly through the dressing before mowing again. This will usually take at least 7 - 14 days, depending on growing conditions.

When grass seed has been applied, allow the new grass to reach approximately 5cm tall before its first cut. Use the mower on its highest setting and remove only the tips of the new grass.

Important Weed Disclaimer

This compost is a natural product and has not been sterilised.

Although the material is composted and screened, we cannot guarantee that it will be completely free from viable weed seeds, small plant material or natural variations.

Aerating, scarifying, spreading compost and regularly watering a lawn can also disturb and encourage dormant weed seeds already present within the existing soil to germinate. Any weeds that appear should be removed promptly before they become established or produce seed.

The presence of occasional weeds does not necessarily mean they originated from the compost. Weed seeds may already be present within the lawn, surrounding gardens, bird droppings or wind-blown material.

Please Note: As a naturally produced and recycled material, the appearance, texture, moisture content and colour of the compost may vary between batches. Small fibrous particles and occasional fragments may remain following the 10mm screening process.

This product is designed to improve the soil beneath a lawn gradually. It is not a chemical lawn fertiliser, an instant greening treatment or a finely graded sports-turf dressing.

We use a variety of delivery vehicles and haulage firms to complete our deliveries.

If you live in or near Chester, we'll deliver to you ourselves with a HGV crane, if you live elsewhere in the UK we'll use a pallet network who will use a manually operated pallet truck to move the pallet of bag(s) to the kerbside - onto a level, solid surface such as a tarmac (not gravel or grass sorry).

Bulk Bag and Pallet shipping is free to Cheshire, Flintshire, Wrexham, parts of Manchester, parts of Merseyside and Liverpool - outside of this area prices start at £11.95. Parcels, samples and individual small small bags are shipped with Royal Mail and therefore are not free delivery.

Samples are sent with Royal Mail 2nd class service so please allow 3 to 5 working days (please allow extra during Royal Mail Strikes).

Samples are chosen at random and naturally occurring products may vary slightly in shade and particle size, from load to load.

This is a small amount of product that will fit in your hand, approx 100gms per sample.

Weeds

We do not chemically treat our products for weeds. Weeds thrive in warm, wet weather and especially in very fertile soils and composts like our own. Although every care is taken to remove weeds during our screening process we can not guarantee that weed seeds are not present in the soil or compost that you receive. To keep your topsoil organic we suggest pulling up common weeds, when and if they appear, instead of using chemical weed-killers. Or purchase some of our anti-weed prevent membrane and some gravel or mulch, for an easy weed-free garden!
