Description

Linum 'Bright Eyes' Seeds

'Bright Eyes' is a stunning variety of annual Flax that looks like it has been painted by hand. It produces masses of wide, saucer-shaped flowers with glistening, satin-white petals. In the centre of each bloom sits a striking ring of carmine-red, creating a beautiful "eye" that draws pollinators in.

This is a plant of movement. Standing on slender, wiry stems (approx 45cm), it sways and shimmers in the slightest breeze. It is the perfect antidote to heavy, blocky bedding plants, adding a light, airy, meadow-like feel to borders and containers. It is incredibly easy to grow, flowering in just a few months from sowing.

๐ŸŒฟ Understanding the Plant

Linum grandiflorum 'Bright Eyes' is a Hardy Annual (H3). Unlike its perennial blue cousins, this variety is built for speed and immense flower power, completing its entire life cycle in a single UK summer season.

The "One Day" Wonder: Flax flowers are famously ephemeral. Each individual bloom opens with the sunrise and usually drops its petals by late afternoon. However, you needn't worry about a bare plantโ€”'Bright Eyes' produces such a staggering volume of buds that a fresh flush of Hand-painted blooms appears every single morning for weeks on end.

Movement in the Border: Because the stems are so slender and the foliage is fine, this plant acts as a "weaver," dancing in the wind and softening the appearance of sturdier perennials. It brings a natural, wildflower meadow aesthetic to even the most formal cottage garden.

๐ŸŒฑ Growing Guide

Flax is a classic "scatter and grow" plant that is exceptionally easy to establish from seed.

How to Sow:
Sow directly outdoors from March to May, or in September for earlier flowers the following spring. Scatter the seeds thinly onto a raked surface and cover very lightly with soil. They have a sensitive taproot and strongly dislike being moved, so direct sowing into their final position is always recommended. Germination typically takes 14-21 days.

Where to Plant:
They demand full sun to perform; in shade, the flowers will simply refuse to open. They thrive in average, well-drained soil and are excellent choices for dry banks, gravel gardens, or hot south-facing borders where other plants might struggle.

Ongoing Care:
Once established, 'Bright Eyes' is remarkably drought-tolerant and requires very little maintenance. In particularly exposed or windy UK gardens, you can place a few twiggy sticks among the plants to provide a natural support frame for their slender, swaying stems.

The striking red eye of this Flax pairs beautifully with rich maroons or vertical structures from our range:

  • โšซ Cornflower 'Black Ball': The Colour Echo. The deep chocolate-maroon of the Cornflower perfectly picks up the carmine-red centre of the Flax. This is a sophisticated, moody pairing that looks wonderful in the morning sun.
  • ๐Ÿฐ Larkspur 'Giant Hyacinth Mixed': Height & Shape. The tall, rigid vertical spikes of Larkspur provide a strong architectural backdrop for the lower, frothy, swaying habit of the Flax.
