How to Sow:
Direct sow outdoors from March to May, or in September for significantly stronger plants the following summer. Unlike many flower seeds, grass seeds prefer a light covering of soil to germinate. Sow 5mm deep into prepared soil. Germination is typically rapid and reliable, occurring within 14-21 days.

Where to Plant:
They demand full sun to develop the best golden tones and thrive in almost any well-drained soil. Briza is highly adaptable and performs best in average-to-poor soil; over-fertilising will encourage excessive green leaf blades at the expense of the nodding "lantern" heads. Space plants 20-25cm apart in generous drifts to maximize the "quaking" effect.

The Drying Secret:
For everlasting arrangements, harvest the stems when the seed heads are fully developed but still possess a pale green-to-gold transition. Harvesting before they turn completely straw-coloured ensures the "lockets" remain firm and do not shatter. Hang upside down in small bunches in a dark, dry, well-ventilated location for 2-3 weeks.
