Craspedia Drumstick

Description

Craspedia 'Drumstick' Seeds

If you want to add a touch of modern art to your borders, Craspedia (Billy Buttons) is the answer. This unique Australian native produces a rosette of silver-green foliage, from which shoot up tall, stiff, unbranched stems topped with perfectly spherical, golden-yellow flower heads that look like little suns on sticks.

The flowers are a vibrant, sunshine yellow that demands attention. They are tough, tactile, and incredibly long-lasting—whether used fresh in a funky, modern bouquet or dried for winter arrangements and wreaths. They add a geometric "pop" that no other flower can mimic. Ideal for both fresh and dried arrangements, Craspedia flowers from mid-summer to autumn and the colour fades very little when dried, lasting for years.

🌿 Understanding the Plant

Pycnosorus globosus (formerly Craspedia globosa) is technically a Tender Perennial, but in the UK climate, it is most successfully grown as a Half-Hardy Annual (H2/H3). Native to the sun-baked regions of Australia, it is adapted for survival in poor, dry soils and requires a long, warm growing season to successfully produce its iconic golden spheres.

The "Wire" Stem: Known also as "Drumsticks," the plant is prized for its remarkably rigid, unbranched stems. These stems are naturally sturdy and do not require staking, making them an ideal candidate for professional-standard bouquets, buttonholes, and structured floral designs where a perfectly straight line is essential.

The Everlasting Hero: Billy Buttons are one of the most rewarding "everlasting" flowers to grow. The perfectly spherical flower heads dry almost exactly as they appear when fresh, retaining their vibrant yellow pigment for several years. This makes them a cornerstone of the modern dried floral movement, valued for their texture and longevity.

🌱 Growing Guide

Craspedia is a heat-loving plant that requires an early start indoors to guarantee a prolific harvest in the UK.

How to Sow:
Sow indoors from February to April. Surface sow the seeds onto moist seed compost and cover with only a very fine sprinkling of vermiculite; the seeds require light to germinate and must not be buried. Maintain a humid, warm environment between 20-25°C. Germination typically occurs within 14-21 days and can occasionally be erratic.

Where to Plant:
They demand full sun and thrive in well-drained, even poor, sandy, or stony soils. Only plant out in late May or June once all risk of frost has passed. They are an excellent choice for gravel gardens, south-facing borders, or terracotta containers where their drought-tolerant nature is a significant advantage.

Ongoing Care:
Craspedia is remarkably low-maintenance once established. Ensure the low-growing basal rosette of silver-green leaves remains weed-free. For the highest quality dried flowers, harvest the stems once the yellow spheres are fully formed, hard to the touch, and vibrant in colour. Hang them in bunches upside down in a dark, dry, well-ventilated location to preserve the yellow pigment.
